Ghost towns as cultural tourism destinations - analysis of examples

Abstract


The article aims at analysing cities, which constitute examples of abandoned cities, regarded as destinations chosen by tourists interested in culture. After a brief outline of the work, an analysis of tourists intentions occurs as well as the part they take in the research on destinations associated with Dark Tourism. This short part of the work follows an analysis of specific cases, which are examples of abandoned cities, which function as destinations in cultural tourism. Ukrainian Prypiat is analysed, after the local people abandoned it in 1986; Japanese island Hashima (Gunkajima), where a coal mine and settlements established for mine workers were located; the location in French where a famous tragedy of World War II took place - Oradour-sur-Glane; and Canadian centre of Gold Rush - Barkerville - a city, which at the present time is a well prospering tourist centre. The aim of the article is to emphasise the problem of the research on abandoned cities referred to as cultural tourism destinations.
